The PRS story is one of the more inspiring stories in modern guitar history. His family did not have the money to buy him the musical instruments he wanted. If Smith wanted a guitar, he would have to learn to build it himself. It was a guitar that he built for one of his music instructors who basically told him that he would get full credit for the class if he could turn a bag full of wood into a functioning guitar. Smith succeeded, and went on to create his first pre-production models in the coming years. Soon, Smith dropped out of college to pursue his career as a luthier and guitar maker, opening a luthier and guitar repair shop with a handful of employees in Annapolis, Maryland. Beginning in , Smith would build about one guitar per month until his brand took off in
10 Things We Learned from Paul Reed Smith
If you love guitars as much as I do, the cost of collecting these instruments can take a toll on the checkbook, so one of my favorite pastimes is spelunking in the local pawn shops or perusing the local Craigslist ads. However, this is also one of the easiest ways to get ripped off. Knowing how to spot a fake versus the real thing is key if you are going to partake in this activity, particularly in this day in age where the counterfeit guitar problem worsens by the day almost.
A counterfeit guitar is a real nuisance.
Mark Series but appears to have been an influence on the young Paul Reed Smith who later used a similar shape for his electric instruments.
Here are the highlights:. One door closes on a guitarist, the next opens for an award-winning guitar builder. If you take a Strat and a Les Paul Jr.
It took a long time to get the body shape to the point that it was comfortable to the eye, comfortable with the way it felt, and comfortable to how it works as part of a musical instrument.

Paul Reed Smith has done more for the high end guitar market than any other person alive. The early PRS guitars were absolutely the best guitars I had ever seen or played in my life. The absolute best thing that Paul ever did was to bring the perceived price of an electric guitar up to the level where a consumer would actually consider buying a custom made instrument.
Today there are hundreds of small builders who owe their success to Paul. I am one of them. These other companies even though they built great guitars failed to capture the imagination and hearts of thousands of guitarists who could afford to purchase a beautiful guitar. Paul succeeded where all others failed. I am not a huge fan of what he is doing today but his guitars will always have a special place in my heart. They were so enthusiastic that I simply could not ignore them.

Year Identification / Serial Numbers
How can I find out when my American-made instrument was manufactured? Most notably, production dates have been penciled or stamped on the butt end of the heel of the neck of most guitars and basses, although there were periods when this was not consistently done to , for example or simply omitted. Neck-dating can be useful in determining the approximate age of a guitar, but it is certainly not definitive because the neck date simply refers to the date that the individual component was produced, rather than the complete instrument.
Given the modular nature of Fender production techniques, an individual neck may have been produced in a given year, then stored for a period of time before being paired with a body to create a complete guitar, perhaps, for example, in the following year. Therefore, while helpful in determining a range of production dates, a neck date is obviously not a precisely definitive reference. Most specifications for a given Fender instrument model change little if at all throughout the lifetime of the model.

The year of manufacture is determined the same way for the EG models. Like the CE models the serial number is located on the neck plate on the back of the guitar. The contact reed determines the model: 5 or EG for the EG models, then the sequential number for that particular model. The year of epiphone is determined the same way for the Swamp Ash Special. Like the CE and EG models the serial date is located on the neck plate on the back of the guitar.

Paul Reed Smith released the original PRS Standard 24 guitar at the NAMM show way back in and it has since become as classic and revered as any of the most famous guitar models out there, with a roster of users populated by an impressive array of guitar heroes. As a custom US-made guitar it has always had a boutique level price tag, putting it out of reach for the average player – that is, until PRS released its Korean made SE models, allowing the average, non-professional guitarist to obtain a surprisingly generous and well made slice of the full fat PRS pie.
For , PRS is releasing the SE Standard range, made in Indonesia, selling at an all new low price but claimed to offer build quality and hardware as close as possible to the company’s more expensive guitars. The question is: can they possibly do justice to such an illustrious name? Essentially the SE Standard 24 is a stripped back version of the original US made guitars we all know and love.
In order to keep production costs as low as possible the body shape is a simplified version of the more expensive USA models but retains the core visual appeal and is still a highly attractive design that looks every bit as cool as its more expensive siblings. The guitar features very solid hardware for this price point in the form of two PRS SE humbuckers, an HFS Treble in the bridge and an SE Vintage Bass in the neck, an official PRS tremolo, volume and tone controls with a 3-way switch and, impressively for the price, a coil tap offering single coil tones.
PRS is even throwing in a decent quality SE gig bag for free that is more than adequate for the average user and attractive enough to be worn with pride! But despite a thorough inspection we could find no signs of it. Upper fret access is no issue thanks to the contoured lower cutaway and both chordal and lead parts feel super comfortable throughout the guitar’s range. Tuning stability is also very good, matched with accurate intonation and a bridge that might be the best I’ve ever tried for a guitar that is considered a budget friendly option.
